An impoverished miller seeks a better life for his only daughter by arranging her marriage to a wealthy stranger. She wants to help her family, but something wicked lurks in the woods where her bridegroom lives. This Chimera Theatre adaptation uses puppetry and physical theatre to tell this classic Grimm Brothers fairy tale tinged with horror and a little blood. Recommended for ages 14 and up.
Brief synopsis:
Three women are telling a folk story that was passed onto them for generations. A miller’s daughter is at her wedding; her father arranged her to married a handsome man from out of town. Before the ceremony is complete, she faints. We see the last few days through a flashback (using puppetry and physical theatre). The bride meets her bridegroom at a graveyard then she has a terrible terrible dream that he kidnaps and murders a little girl from her village. She goes to seek out his cabin in the woods. As she arrives, a bird warns her not to go inside. The house seems empty, but she hears something in the basement and goes to investigate. She finds an old woman chained up there then hears footsteps upstairs. She hides as her bridegroom arrives with the little girl and murders her then eats her. The old woman offers him wine and he passes out, allowing the bride to escape into the woods. She gets losts, but the girl helps find her way home. She wakes up back at the wedding and we see if she marries him or not…
