THE STORYTELLERS
Ruth Bieber is our long distance storyteller, travelling all the way from Kelowna to join us. Ruth is the Founder of InsideOut Theatre, where she was the artistic director for 17 years. She is the author of “Disability Theatre from the InsideOut”.
Courtney Knight is a lover of stories and a student at Douglas College studying therapeutic recreation.
Laura Mackenrot is a Financial Consultant for People with disabilities who specializes in the Registered Disability Savings Plan. Laura serves on many boards and committees, including the VocalEye board. We welcome Laura back to Tales for the third time as our sequinned lucky charm.
And our featured storyteller is the incomparable Nicola Cavendish:
“When I was told by the Eye Specialist that my vision would be so compromised by my consistent indifference to my chronic illness DIABETES, and that BLINDNESS would be my reality, the ground fell away beneath me. I left his VGH Eye Clinic and ran to my dear friend Larry Lillo in shock seeking I knew not what.”
The acclaimed award-winning actress, writer and director, Nicola Cavendish joins us thanks to an invitation from VocalEye Member Rosamund van Leeuwen who attended a performance of The Goodnight Bird earlier this year and met with Nicola at a talk back session. VocalEye also had the pleasure of describing Nicola’s performance in the Arts Club production of 4000 Miles last fall, where she graciously chatted with VocalEye users after the show. We look forward to describing her outstanding performance again in the touring production of 4000 Miles in February 2016.
Nicola has been performing professionally since she graduated from UBC’s theatre program in 1976. Her successful career has included five seasons at the Vancouver Playhouse Theatre Company, four seasons at the Shaw Festival and performances at countless theatres all across Canada and around the world, working with many of the best names in the business. Nicola is perhaps best known for her critically acclaimed performance in the one-woman show, SHIRLEY VALENTINE, which she has performed more than 600 times since her debut in the role 25 years ago. Nicola most recently landed a role in the new CBC series THE ROMEO SECTION where she portrays a retired CSIS agent who knows too much and mentors a younger agent who is in very deep. When not busy performing and travelling, Nicola makes her home in the Okanagan, where she is currently writing 3 new plays and a children’s book.
